The Corridors of Memory and That First Meeting
Far from the noisy streets of the city, that old corner of the college was still as fresh in Aryan's memories as if it were only yesterday. Aryan, who was somewhat quiet and introverted by nature, often remained lost in his books. On the other hand, there was Mira—playful, laughing, and full of energy. Their friendship was nothing short of a miracle. Wherever Mira went, happiness seemed to follow her automatically.
Aryan remembers that rainy day when Mira first bumped into him. His books had scattered, and Mira was teasing him, saying, "If you read such heavy books, when will you see the beauty of the world, Mr. Philosopher?" That day, for the first time, Aryan saw that spark in Mira's eyes which was to become his support for many years to come.
The Deepening Colors of Friendship
Three years of college passed in the blink of an eye. During this time, Aryan and Mira's friendship grew even deeper. Aryan knew what was going on in Mira's mind without her saying a word. For Mira, Aryan was that safe corner where she could leave all her troubles behind. Aryan had never asked for anything from Mira. For him, just one smile from Mira was enough.
"There is much to gain in this world, but for me, your carefree laughter is the most precious treasure."
Aryan would often say this in jest, but Mira knew how much truth was hidden behind those words. Time passed, and the race for careers took them to different cities. Mira moved to Mumbai to work for a large advertising agency, while Aryan stayed in his hometown and made writing and photography his profession.
Changing Cities and a Fading Smile
In the beginning, phone calls would last for hours. Mira would tell him everything about her new life, new friends, and office politics. But gradually, the frequency of their conversations began to dwindle. Aryan felt that Mira's voice no longer had that old ring to it. A sense of fatigue and a strange emptiness began to reflect in her words.
One day, Mira called. Her voice was very low. She just said, "Aryan, can we meet? I miss you very much." Without a second thought, Aryan booked a ticket for the next day. When he reached Mumbai and met Mira, he was stunned. That Mira, who never seemed to stop, looked very quiet and sad today.
A Ray of Hope Amidst the Darkness
Mira had lost herself amidst a toxic relationship and heavy work pressure. That innocent smile on her face, which Aryan had enshrined in his soul, had vanished somewhere. Aryan looked at her and said nothing. He just held her hand and took her to the seashore.
Amidst the roar of the waves, Mira broke down and cried. She told him how she had forgotten herself in the process of trying to keep everyone else happy. How her success had left her lonely. Aryan let her speak; he let her tears flow. When she calmed down, Aryan took an old photograph out of his pocket.
It was a picture from that day in college when Mira had won a play for the first time and was laughing like crazy. Aryan said, "Mira, whether you win the world or lose it, for me, you will always be that same girl whose smile used to start my morning. Your happiness is dearer to me than your success."
The Journey Back and a New Beginning
Aryan stayed with Mira for a few days. He reminded her again of the small things she loved—listening to old songs, walking without any purpose, and getting drenched in the rain. Gradually, the glow began to return to Mira's face. She realized that she had handed the key to her happiness over to others.
Aryan's selfless love and unwavering faith stood Mira back up on her feet. She distanced herself from that toxic relationship and began to look at her work with a new perspective. She was still in Mumbai, but now she was not alone. She had Aryan's words with her, which taught her to smile through every difficulty.
A Selfless Promise
Several months later, Mira returned to her home. This time she did not look weak, but even stronger. In the evening, when they were both sitting on the hill near that old college, Mira asked Aryan, "Why did you do so much for me, Aryan? Did you never want anything in return? No expression of love, no promise?"
Looking at the setting sun in the distance, Aryan replied with a smile, "Mira, love doesn't always mean possessing someone. The peace one gets from seeing someone happy is above every other feeling in the world. Whenever I wished for something from God, I only wished for your smile. If you are smiling, then consider my love complete."
Conclusion: A Soulful Connection
There were tears in Mira's eyes, but this time they were not of sorrow, but of gratitude. She rested her head on Aryan's shoulder and both watched the fading evening in silence. Words were no longer needed between them. It was a relationship that required no name—where one friend's happiness had become the purpose of the other's life.
Even today, whenever Mira feels sad, she remembers Aryan, and Aryan's smiling face comes before her eyes, saying—'Just keep smiling'. And that is the most beautiful part of their story—a friendship that stands beyond time and distance, based solely on selfless emotion.
